According to details, during the British rule in the Indian subcontinent, there were four railway headquarters, one in Mumbai, Calcutta, Chittagong and Lahore, while there were only two academies, one in Mumbai and the other in Lahore , which was called the Pakistan Railways Academy Walton.
The Walton Railway Academy was established in 1929. Before that, there was a small training school in Lyallpur, present-day Faisalabad, in 1925. After that, construction began in Lahore in 1926, and in 1929, the Pakistan Railway Academy Walton was founded.
Even today, Pakistan Railway Academy Walton combines the oldest railway training system with the most modern, that is, the ancient and modern systems. Every year, 1400 to 1500 domestic and foreign students, whether they are related to signals or traffic or any other field, go to their respective countries and become associated with the railway system.
Pakistan Railway Academy Walton was accepted for certification by the United Nations in 1954, meaning that the certificates of students trained and graduated from Pakistan Railway Academy Walton are recognized all over the world.
This is the reason why after the formation of Pakistan, students from about 50 countries used to come here to complete their education and training, including Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan and Bangladesh, among others. When regular training was started here in 1929, training was given using a steam-powered engine built in 1908. This training process started in 1930 and continued until the arrival of diesel engines, then after the arrival of diesel-powered engines, regular training of railway driver technician engineers started using electronic engines, meaning the use of the latest technology and the oldest technology is still ongoing at Walton Railway Academy today.
According to Zafar, trainer at Walton Railway Academy, physical training is given regularly to students from abroad as well as students from within the country. From running a vehicle on a railway track to changing the fork, the process is taught and how to shift a train from one track to another in case of any emergency, this process is also demonstrated.
Pakistan Railways Walton Academy is the only training institute in Pakistan where the railways are providing training to operate their entire system and this has been going on since 1929 till date. A simulator system equipped with modern railway technology is also an adornment of this academy which is a regular train in which all the technology is latest. Training is given through this train, from the speed of the train to the process of applying emergency brakes and steps are also taken to avoid accidents in case of any emergency.
Pakistan Railway Academy is a great educational institution. India has also developed its Railway Academy on modern lines. Be it a refresher course for drivers or promotion, all employees and officers have to be a part of the academy in some way or the other. Those who complete the training from here are regularly issued certificates and diplomas, which cover the fact that the person who studies here is capable of taking up a job in any department of the railways.
The Pakistan Railway Academy has adopted the most modern system from 1930 to the present day, and its upgrading will continue from time to time as more technologies are introduced in the coming days
